Why eat soup in the Summer?

There are many good reasons for consuming soup even when the weather is hot, including:

  • Soups are full of nutritious fruits and vegetables – an easy way to your 5-a-day!
  • Summer soups can help you to stay hydrated when the weather is hot
  • Cold soups can be cooling and refreshing
  • Soup is easy to make and typically doesn’t require you to use the oven
  • Summer soup recipes are a great way to use up a glut of homegrown vegetables
Hands holding a basket overflowing with fruits and vegetables, including sweetcorn, grapes, peppers, plums, mushrooms, carrots, aubergine, cucumber. On the table in front of the basket are more fruits and vegetables including a large slice of watermelon.

Summer soup – hot or cold

While everyone is used to eating hot soup in Autumn and Winter, Summer soups can be served cold as well as hot. Summer soups make the best of the season’s bounty of vegetables, including fresh peas, asparagus, ripe tomatoes, and so much more.

Cold soups can be chunky or smooth, and tangy, zesty or creamy. Think of a classic gazpacho with sharp-sweet tomatoes, or a cooling cucumber and yogurt soup. There are so many options and they’re all delicious!

Fresh fruit soups

You can also make soups from fresh fruit! Fruit soups, especially those made with berries or cherries, are a classic component of Eastern European Jewish cuisine. They are a wonderful way to start, or finish, a Summertime lunch or dinner.

A cold cherry soup, with a splash of kirsch and a scoop of vanilla ice-cream, makes an easy, delicious and unusual end to a lovely Summer meal.
