Understanding Courgettes

Courgettes, also known as zucchinis, are a summer squash that belong to the Cucurbitaceae plant family, which includes cucumbers, melons, and squash. They can range in colour from deep green to bright yellow, and come in a number of different shapes including balls and the familiar long cyclindrical courgettes. Each variety has its own unique flavour and texture.

Originating in the Americas, courgettes as we know them were developed and cultivated in Italy in the 19th Century. By the 1920s they were reintroduced to the USA by Italian immigrants. Courgettes have subsequently been adopted by cuisines around the world, thanks to their ease of cultivation and versatility in both savoury and sweet dishes.

Nutritional benefits of courgettes

One of the reasons courgettes have become so popular is their health benefits. They are low in calories but contain a raft of essential nutrients like potassium, manganese, B vitamins, and antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin A. These nutrients will support a healthy immune system, and also contribute to reducing inflammation in the body.

Courgettes also contain plenty of dietary fibre – both soluble and insoluble – which is essential for maintaining digestive health. It can also be beneficial in managing cholesterol levels and supporting heart health.

Courgettes – Delicious and versatile!

Beyond their health benefits, courgettes’ mild flavour and hearty texture make them an ideal ingredient for a wide range of recipes. From pasta dishes and casseroles to baked goods and impressive stuffed main dishes, courgettes can do it all! They are a staple ingredient for creative cooks looking to enhance their meals with nutritious, flavourful vegetables.

Preparation Basics

When choosing courgettes, look for firm, vibrant-coloured specimens with smooth, unblemished skins. They should feel heavy for their size, indicating freshness and a good moisture content.

Storing your courgettes properly can extend their shelf life, keeping them fresh and ready for your recipes. Refrigerate them in the vegetable crisper drawer, but avoid washing them until you’re ready to use them to prevent premature spoilage.

Preparing courgettes for cooking is straightforward. Start by washing the courgette under cool running water and then dry it with a clean cloth or paper towel. Trim off both ends and then proceed as your recipe directs — whether that means slicing, dicing, grating or spiralling into vegetable noodles.

Ways to prepare courgettes - slicing, grating, spiralling, and dicing.

When cooking courgettes, remember that they contain a lot of water. To avoid mushy dishes, avoid overcooking or stewing. You may also consider salting and draining sliced or shredded courgettes before cooking to remove excess moisture. This simple step can elevate your courgette dishes, preserving their desirable texture and concentrating their flavour.

With these basics in hand, you’re well-equipped to tackle any courgette recipe, ensuring delicious and successful outcomes every time.

Courgette FAQs

Can courgettes be eaten raw?

Yes, courgettes can be eaten raw! Thinly sliced or grated courgettes add a fresh, slightly sweet flavour and a crisp texture to salads, or they can be spiralled into vegetable noodles and enjoyed with a sauce or dressing. Raw courgettes retain all their nutritional value, making them a healthy addition to any meal.

How do I prevent courgettes from becoming soggy when cooked?

To prevent courgettes from becoming soggy when cooked, avoid overcooking them, as they contain a high water content that releases during the cooking process. Cook over a higher heat for a shorter time to brown the surface and retain a firm texture. Don’t overcrowd the pan in order to avoid steaming, which can lead to sogginess.

What are some easy ways to add courgettes to my diet?

Courgettes are incredibly versatile, so it’s easy to incorporate them into your diet in various ways. Whether you prefer them raw in salads, grilled, roasted, or sautéed, courgettes can be a delicious side dish or main ingredient in pastas, soups, and stews. Spiralized courgettes make a great low-carb substitute for noodles, and they can also be baked into cakes or muffins for a nutritional boost.

Are courgettes nutritious?

Courgettes are very nutritious, offering a good source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre. They contain significant amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and manganese. Courgettes also have a high water content, making them hydrating and perfect for a healthy, balanced diet.
